No.: 2012-20120104008

Date: July 27, 2012

Cessna Aircraft Company - Model 172N Airplanes; and

Lycoming Engines - Model O-320-H2AD Engines

This notification advises all aircraft owners, operators, maintenance organizations, and parts distributors, of the listed model of aircraft and engine, which unapproved parts were sold and may have been installed on these aircraft or engines.

During the course of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) audit of Superior Air Parts, Inc., located at 621 South Royal Lane, Suite 100, Coppell, Texas, an FAA inspector discovered that crankshaft bearings, part number SL14105A M03 were sold without FAA production approval. These crankshaft bearings were marked “FAA-PMA” along with the part number. Sales of this part occurred before the new Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) part 21 became effective on April 16, 2011.

14 CFR § 21.303(a) states in part, no person may produce a modification or replacement part for sale for installation on a type certificated product unless it is produced pursuant to a parts manufacturer approval (PMA). We recommend that aircraft owners, operators, maintenance organizations, and parts distributors inspect their aircraft records and parts inventory for these unapproved parts produced by Superior Air Parts. If any of these suspect parts are founding in existing stock, the FAA recommends segregating the unapproved parts to prevent inadvertent installation.

You can obtain further information concerning this investigation and guidance regarding the above-referenced parts from the FAA Manufacturing Inspection District Office (MIDO) shown below. In addition to the above recommendations, the FAA would appreciate any information concerning the discovery of this or similar parts, the means used to identify the source, and the action taken to remove them from aircraft and/or parts inventories.
