Northern Lights College and Jiangsu College sign cooperation agreement

China’s Jiangsu Jiao Tong College and Northern B.C.’s Northern Lights College in Dawson Creek, Canada, have agreed to work towards a programming partnership involving NLC’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineering program (AME).

Representatives from each institution signed a Cooperation Agreement for Development of an Education Project in AME on Sept. 29, during a visit to NLC’s Dawson Creek Campus by four senior administrators from Jiangsu College, and two government officials from JiangSu Province.

Jiangsu College is interested in building an AME program and has approached NLC as a potential partner.

“They are interested in setting up an AME program in China in the next five years. We’re in the beginning stages of discussions," said Shelley Nickel, International Education Coordinator at NLC. ”They appreciate the high standards of Transport Canada certification, and want to have their workers trained to those standards."

Nickel explained that the first step in a partnership would involve setting up English as a Second Language training in China. NLC has offered ESL in China in the past. The ESL training would include vocabulary specific to AME, so that students would be prepared for eventual entry into the AME program at the Dawson Creek Campus.

The delegation took a 45-minute tour of the Aerospace Centre, led by AME program chair John Morrison. Morrison outlined the format of NLC’s 15-month program, and the training and certification received by graduates. As well, they met a current international AME student from Macau, China. The delegation also visited the Bear Mountain Wind Park and the Fort St. John Campus.

NLC’s International Education department, which is based at the Fort St. John Campus, has welcomed students from around the world for more than two decades. In addition to the current student from China, the AME program has trained a number of international students from countries including Switzerland and Colombia.
